Eligibility Requirements

Rising 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students interested in joining Upward Bound Math and Science are encouraged to apply.  Limited spaces are available for students who have completed the 11th grade. To be a member of the West Virginia Upward Bound Math and Science Program the student must:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident
  • Be a first-generation college-bound student whose parent(s)/guardian(s) did not graduate from a four-year college or university and/or meet financial eligibility guidelines set forth by the U.S. Department of Education
  • Attend a target high school: John Marshall or Weir High School
  • Have the desire to pursue postsecondary education beyond high school
  • Express interest in Upward Bound Math and Science through graduation
  • Submit the Upward Bound Math and Science Student Enrollment Application, including the required accompanying documentation outlined in the application


Preference is given to students:

  • Enrolled in 9th and 10th grades at participating high schools
  • With a strong interest in math, science, or engineering
  • Who plans to remain in the program through graduation from high school
  • With the intent to participate in and complete the six-week summer program each year
  • Who actively participates in UBMS activities
